Hamburg wins "Startup Ecosystem Stars Awards"

International Chamber of Commerce honours city's efforts to boost startups and digitalise administration

The International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) has honoured Hamburg with the "Startup Ecosystem Stars Awards" for its efforts to boost startups and digitalise local government, a press release said Wednesday (December 4, 2024). Scaleup Hamburg, a scheme run by Hamburg Invest, won the award in the "Exceptional Industry Support" category while the venture client unit GovTecHH and the public IT service provider Dataport triumphed in the "Innovative Procurement" category.

Hamburg leading centre of startups

"Hamburg is a leading European centre of innovative start-ups. Winning the Startup Ecosystem Award (again) underlines the attractiveness and strength of the Scaleup Hamburg scheme," said Rolf Strittmatter, Managing Director of Hamburg Invest. Scaleup Hamburg helps established companies to network and collaborate with promising  startups and scaleups. Pilot projects especially on sustainability can be tested and analysed quickly and easily in companies across the city. Local companies gain access to innovative approaches and scale-ups generate customers and expand their business model in a new market. "Successful networking brings progressive solutions to Hamburg, eases access to the city and strengthens our innovative power in the long term," Strittmatter stressedhj.

Boosting collaborations and using new technologies

The City of Hamburg also wants to boost collaborations with startups and encourage the use of new technologies. "We need efficient procurement procedures to use new technologies quickly and in line with demand, " said Christian Pfromm, Chief Digital Officer. In early 2024, the city included an experimentation clause in its procurement guidelines. That simplifies cooperation with partners in a bid to upgrade and digitalise the administration. A framework agreement was also reached with Dataport to speed up procedures, cut out bureaucracy and to boost efficiency. "The digitalisation of public administration requires innovation. AI and data-related solutions hold potential. We and sponsors need to recognise this and use the innovations of smaller companies such as start-ups," said Johann Bizer, CEO of Dataport. The excellence of startups can be used even better through the venture client unit, GovTechH, and benefit Hamburg.
