Hamburg as catalyst of global energy transition

Hamburg is increasingly becoming a place where movers and shakers are advancing the global energy transition. At the same time, the city is showcasing pioneering approaches to how metropolises can respond to global challenges. As part of the Klima Campus, universities and scientific institutions are conducting cutting-edge research into climate, climate change and climate impacts. Several international players in the wind power industry are based in the Hamburg Metropolitan Region, which has become a model of pioneering energy systems and is morphing into a north European green hydrogen hub. Hamburg is also a testing ground for innovative transport and energy solutions. As a strong European start-up centre, the city successfully promotes green tech start-ups such as 1Komma5°. The company, one of the youngest German unicorns, is based in Hamburg and seeks to accelerate the energy transition. In 2015, Hamburg launched its own digital SDG dashboard to help achieve the UN’s SDGs.
