Free live streams and concert recordings from Elbphilharmonie

22 December 2020
Media library to feature concerts and recordings until New Year's Eve

The Elbphilharmonie began streaming Monday (December 21, 2020) free live concerts and is making numerous concert recordings available e.g.,  Bach's B minor Mass with the Balthasar Neumann Choir and Ensemble conducted by Thomas Hengelbrock in the media library.

Christmas Oratorio to Brahms Miniatures

The offers range from wonderful Brahms Miniatures sung by Matthias Goerne to a live stream of the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra with the cellist Gautier Capuçon as soloist to the Christmas Oratorio by the Ensemble Resonanz from the Resonanzraum. The following is an overview of the upcoming highlights.

Bach's Mass in B Minor

Originally scheduled for December 4, 2020, the Elbphilharmonie hosted the concert on December 6, 2020 without an audience and had it filmed by remote-controlled cameras outside the concert hall. The Balthasar Neumann Choir and the Balthasar Neumann Ensemble, conducted by their spiritus rector Thomas Hengelbrock, performed Bach's Mass in B minor in the Grand Hall after weeks of rehearsals. The recording is now available in the Elbphilharmonie's media library.

Mini series: Goerne sings Brahms (23.12.)

A mini-series of Johannes Brahms’ songs performed by the baritone Matthias Goerne and accompanied by Alexander Schmalcz on piano has been recorded in the Elbphilharmonie's Grand Hall and will be available from Thursday December 23, 2020. The series begins at 11 am with "Sonntag" op. 47/3, followed by one Brahms song every week until January 20, 2021.

Christmas Oratorio by Bach (25.12)

"No Christmas without WO!" is the maxim of Ensemble Resonanz. This year, the ensemble has arranged a special version with 30 arias, recitatives, choruses and chorales from Bach's masterpiece. The score remains untouched and features electric guitar and Hammond organ sound in continuo, a single trumpet and the whole ensemble on the chorales. This is what Hausmusik sounds like in the Resonanzraum St.Pauli and begins at 4 pm.

"Die Fledermaus" (31.12.)

Last year, "Die Fledermaus" by Johann Strauss premiered on New Year's Day to a rapturous audience. The popular operetta, directed by Michael Sturminger will be performed at 11 am on New Year's Eve this year and featuring the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra, Manfred Honeck on the podium and top soloists such as Katharina Konradi, Caroline Peters and Bo Skovhus. The production will be available as video-on-demand for another seven days.
