"Wirtschaftswoche" commissions ranking of 4,000 companies across Germany

Five Hamburg-based companies are among the weekly Wirtschaftswoche's Top 100 Innovation Champions published in August. The German business magazine had commissioned the Munich Strategy consulting agency with ranking 4,000 companies nationwide with turnover between EUR 10 million and EUR 1 billion. The Hanseatic companies are Weinmann Emergency Medical Technology (10), Altona Diagnostics (15), Dermalog Identification Systems (80), Goodmills Deutschland (89) and the Funk Group (92).

SMEs' strong economic performance and above-average portfolio

The ranked Hanseatic firms scored points based on strong economic performance and an above-average portfolio design, Munich Strategy told Hamburg News. In terms of portfolio design, Dermalog stood out while both Weinmann Emergency Medical Technology and Altona Diagnostics performed particularly well in the "R&D and Tech Power" category. The latter specializes in emergency, transport and disaster medicine while Weinmann co-operates with rescue services, hospitals and armies and develops innovative and user-friendly medical technology in close co-operation with the emergency rescue sector.

Innovative strength and success crucial to ranking

Altona Diagnostics ranked 15th because of its innovative character, according to Munich Strategy,  The medical diagnostics company, which develops and manufactures in vitro diagnostic tests for the PCR-based detection of pathogens, scored with "great production depth, automated manufacturing processes and a fully automated equipment platform for laboratory customers". Goodmills impressed with its "innovative strategic orientation" and the Funk Group with its "innovative processes". To determine innovative strength, Munich Strategy assessed innovative power, perception as an innovative company and sustained investment in innovation (R&D and tech power). Performance was determined based on sales growth data, earnings ratio and EBIT growth over the last four years.
