"This project is a visible sign of the long-term transformation of our refinery to set up renewable and circular solutions in the production of sustainable fuels. This is boosting the energy transition," said Lars Bergmann, Managing Director of Holborn Europa Refinery. Around 220,000 tonnes of green diesel (HVO) and sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) will be produced annually from waste and residual materials as well as low-carbon hydrogen. The plant is unique in Germany and could save around 800,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide in the transport sector, Holborn said.
GDP plant to produce green diesel and sustainable paraffin from 2027
Construction of a green diesel production plant (GDP) is now underway on the site of the Holborn refinery in the Port of Hamburg at a cost of EUR 475 million, a press release said Thursday (September 12, 2024). The plant, which is due to go into operation in 2027, will produce 40,000 litres of low-CO2 fuel per hour.

Green diesel meeting EU sustainability criteria
Low-carbon HVO and SAF fuels would have the same chemical properties as fossil diesel and conventional paraffin. Crucially, they would reduce reliance on crude oil and are environment-friendlier. SAFs reduce CO2 emissions and meet the sustainability criteria of the EU's Renewable Energy Directive (RED III). As a drop-in biofuel in vehicles, green diesel could also be used without modifying engines.
