Record passenger numbers at Hamburg Airport

24 July 2023
Around 330,000 travellers - significant rise in first week of holidays

Demand at Hamburg Airport increased significantly in the first week of the summer holidays with around 330,000 passengers, peaking on July 14 with 55,000 travellers on more than 370 flights. The figure marked the strongest week for Hamburg Airport since 2019 although it is still 85 per cent below pre-pandemic levels in that year.

Private travel rising sharply

Travel procedures went smoothly despite the higher footfall. Many passengers used the digital "Slot & Fly'" to reserve a time slot for the security check in advance. "The 'Fast Lane' in Terminal 2 is open constantly unlike summer 2022," said Katja Bromm, Head of Communications at Hamburg Airport. A similar high level of 40,000 to 50,000 passengers daily are expected as the holidays continue. The high passenger numbers reflect the trend towards private travel, which has risen sharply in the wake of the pandemic. Passenger numbers rose 22 per cent over the first week of the summer holidays in 2022.

Majorca most popular holiday destination

Majorca remains the top holiday destination from Hamburg Airport. Some 15,000 travellers took off to the Balearic island on more than 180 flights. Spain, the Greek islands and Turkey were also particularly popular. Readers of Hamburgs News can find an overview of other destinations from Hamburg Airport here.
