Hamburg and Israel launch innovation partnership

Chamber of Commerce and Hamburg Invest sign co-operation agreement in Tel Aviv

Businesses in Hamburg and Israel's start-up scene are set to forge even closer ties. This comes after Hamburg’s Chamber of Commerce, Hamburg Invest and the Israeli-German Chamber of Commerce signed an agreement Monday (February 20, 2023) on closer co-operation with emphasis on tech scouting. The agreement, which was signed in Tel Aviv, gives Hamburg-based companies an overview of new technologies and digital solutions in Israel and should facilitate contacts to potential partner companies. The agreement is also likely to boost the settlement of Israeli start-ups and scale-ups in Hamburg. The fintech, cyber security, logistics, life science, maritime economy and renewable energies are particularly important sectors. 

Philip Koch, Director International at Hamburg's Chamber of Commerce:

"Israel is an international centre of innovation and can offer important impetus for boosting the digital transformation of Hamburg's economy. In accordance with our economic development strategy 'Hamburg 2040,' we want the collaboration to give Hamburg an edge in these areas and to raise its international visibility. In addition, the cooperation can improve the chances for hamburg companies to gain a foothold in the Israeli market.“ 

Dr Rolf Strittmatter, Managing Director of Hamburg Invest, said: 

"The many links between the two cities can be used to their advantage. Hamburg and Tel Aviv have many commonalities. Apart from their maritime character and high standard of living, both cities share an open and welcoming culture of innovation, which offers an opportunity for development and marketing." 

The collaboration offers talented professionals and the start-up scene in particular excellent networking opportunities. The partners had identified topics for an innovation partnership during a trip by a delegation in June 2022.  

The agreement has been signed for an initial, two-year period. As part of the economic development strategy "Hamburg 2040: How do we want to live in the future - and from what?", the Chamber of Commerce wants to promote international networking with innovation centers. Israel is considered a global innovation and startup center. As part of a Hamburg delegation trip in June 2022, the following were identified topics for an innovation partnership were identified and the expansion of economic relations with Israel was explored.
