"The year 2020 was a special year in many respects. But many young are being born in our city. Expectant parents rightly have great confidence in our hospitals' obstetrics wards and the staff there. The number of accompanying persons was restricted to one in the delivery room area to avoid coronavirus infections among others," said Dr Melanie Leonhard, Senator for Social Affairs.
Five hospitals report over 3,000 births each
A total of 24,705 babies were born in Hamburg's maternity hospitals and birth centres with 24,168 births last year despite the coronavirus pandemic, a press release said Thursday (January 7, 2021) . Five hospitals in Hamburg reported over 3,000 births each. Although the number of births remained high in 2020, the figures were slightly below the peaks in previous years (2019: 24,655 births with 25,099 children).

Last year, the obstetric units at Asklepios Klinik Altona (3,515), Albertinen-Krankenhaus (3,400), Asklepios Klinik Barmbek (3,374), Catholic Marienkrankenhaus (3,316 children) and University Hospital Hamburg-Eppendorf (3,279) reported the highest numbers of newborns.
