Obergeorgswerder industrial and business area

Logistics hub in the south of Hamburg

At the Obergeorgswerder industrial and commercial site, which has been in operation since 2009, large areas are a logistical advantage. Three globally active companies have established themselves here on an area of 40 hectares with over 74,000 square metres of distribution space. The convenient location with direct links to the A1 and A255 motorways, the Port of Hamburg and the nearby airport and rail freight terminal forms an important hub for logistics in northern Germany. In line with ecological standards, sustainable measures such as green roofs and photovoltaic systems have also been implemented at the site, setting an example for resource-saving logistics.

Large-scale logistics facilities

With its considerable size of around 40 hectares, this site was established in 2009. It is ideally suited for extensive logistics requirements in particular. Three internationally active companies are currently based here, and together they provide an impressive distribution area of over 74,000 square metres. The site includes modern high-bay warehouses and cross-docking centres as well as well-equipped, multi-storey office buildings with attractive break rooms. In addition, the local infrastructure is designed to allow for use of heavy goods vehicles. Car parking spaces for employees are located in a separate area to ensure optimum traffic flows. Moreover, walkways that are separated from the carriageway by green belts contribute to a safe working environment.

Excellent traffic links

Direct access to the A1 and A255 north-south motorways (HH-Süd junction) and the port of Hamburg make this location an important logistics hub in Northern Germany. The nearest rail freight terminal, Billwerder-Moorfleet, and Hamburg Airport are only 7 and 18 kilometres away respectively. Two of the companies based here maintain additional logistics sites at the nearby Peute and Hausbruch/Bostelbek industrial estates and can therefore benefit from spatial synergies whenever freight volumes are high.

Noise protection and planting measures

This industrial and commercial site offers great potential for local energy generation through wind power and rooftop photovoltaics. Moreover, a number of protective measures for the soil, nature and landscape have been implemented along the A1 motorway. The companies here focus on various ecological measures: Kühne+Nagel, for instance, employs measure such as green roofs, rainwater recycling, photovoltaic systems, and extensive site planting. The company Sump & Stammer operates a CO2 refrigeration system, provides a home for bees and insects on 7,000 square metres of roof space and generates 21% of its annual electricity consumption through a 4,500 square metre PV system, saving 376,120 kg of CO2 annually. The real estate company Prologis relies on LED hall lighting, alongside other measures.

Obergeorgswerder: selected company profiles

Kühne+Nagel

Established in Bremen in 1890 by August Kühne and Friedrich Nagel, Kühne+Nagel has evolved over the course of 130 years from a freight forwarder to a global logistics partner. The company, which still has its head office in Bremen, employs some 15,000 people at over 130 locations in Germany. In Hamburg, Kühne+Nagel invested around €55 million in its new logistics centre in Obergeorgswerder. The facility comprises five halls with a total handling area of 44,000 square metres, two office buildings, and 166 loading bays for trucks. The new facility employs 450 people and complements Kühne+Nagel’s existing investments: a warehouse in nearby Altenwerder and an office building in the HafenCity district. Obergeorgswerder was chosen due to its favourable location close to the port and the city centre. The roof of one of the halls is equipped with solar cells that produce electricity over an area of 5,000 square metres, and 20,000 trees and shrubs have been planted on almost 2.5 hectares of outdoor space.

Sump & Stammer

Based in Hamburg, Sump & Stammer GmbH is an international trading company specialising in the global distribution of food products. Customers include companies from the cruise industry, hotels and resorts, ship chandlers and catering service providers. Since 2015, Sump & Stammer has been part of Transgourmet, a major European cash & carry company and wholesaler for food. And yet Sump & Stammer's commitment extends well beyond the food trade: at the company’s Hamburg site, 7,000 square metres of green roof help provide a habitat for bees and other insects. The company also favours renewable energies: 21% of its annual electricity needs are generating by its own photovoltaic system. Sump & Stammer thus demonstrates that economic success and ecological responsibility can go hand in hand.

Prologis Germany Management

As an owner, operator and developer of logistics properties, Prologis is active in global and regional markets in North, Central and South America as well as Asia and Europe. The Hamburg Metropolitan Region plays an integral role for the company: the Prologis Park in Obergeorgswerder is located in the heart of one of Europe’s strongest economic regions. Situated in close proximity to the important A1 north-south motorway, the A255 and the port of Hamburg, Obergeorgswerder is a key logistics hub in Northern Germany. The relevant site has a distribution area of 10,339 square metres, comprising a warehouse area of 9,709 square metres and an office area of 630 square metres. The company’s outdoor facilities are suitable for transporting heavy loads of up to 60 tonnes. The Prologis building, which was constructed in 2011, is located on a fully fenced-in site.
